Label distribution arising from [1,2-13C]glucose via pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) and pyruvate carboxylase (PC), respectively. For PDH (red), label incorporation in a clockwise direction is assumed. For PC (blue) label incorporation is considered in an anti-clockwise direction, except for clockwise labelling of glutamate. For the onward processing from α-ketoglutarate in a clockwise direction, the loss of C1 produces [1,2-13C]succinate which is, owing to the symmetry of succinate, identical to the PDH-derived product
