Pathways regulated by PC in cancer. PC plays a central role in metabolism and its regulation may contribute to metabolic plasticity in cancer cells, thereby increasing their metastatic potential. The PC reaction utilizes glucose-derived pyruvate to replenish OAA in the TCA cycle, which may be used for synthesis of fatty acids and/or amino acids when availability of these nutrients is limited. OAA produced from the PC reaction may also contribute to oxidative stress protection. Given the increased accumulation of ROS with cancer progression, the utilization of pyruvate in the PC reaction may be essential in conferring protection from cytotoxic levels of oxidative stress
